I have been looking around to find magazines for my 6.5 Grendel and I saw where someone mentioned they use 7.62x39 magazine for that. Got me curious so I looked it up. It’s not exact, but looks like it could work. What do you think?
I mention this because my perception is that 7.62x 39 is more readily available than 6.5 Grendel. Here is what I found at MidwayUSA when looking for magazines.
I agree with @switchpod, stick with the calibers designed magazines. Your range days will be a much better experience if they are not full of FTF’s. I can’t speak about 7.62x39 magazines working in that application, I have none to try. I do know that the 6.8special is the exact same magazine as the 6.5 Grendel.
As I understand it, the 7.62x39 is the parent case for the 6.5 grendel. The case head is identical for sure. So you might think that magazines would be interchangeable.
If you own a CZ 527 bolt rifle it definitely will work. The grendel and 7.62x39 magazines are identical.
If you somehow found or build an AK in 6.5 Grendel I believe any AK mag would work.
If you ARE TRYING TO RUN 6.5 grendel in an AR platform, might as well just buy purpose built grendel mags, my experience with several purchased online has been just fine.
Alexander Arms comes to mind, they invented the cartridge and their mags have always served me well.
