7mm-08 Trajectory Chart

A bullet’s trajectory describes its path from the barrel to the target. We measure the trajectory by looking at the bullet drop over a specific distance.

Much like the 6.5 Creedmoor, shooters find the flat trajectory of the 7mm-08 ideal for long-range shooting, varmint hunting, and taking big game like antelope, deer and black bears. Many outdoorsmen believe the 7mm-08 lacks the stopping power to ethically harvest elk, moose and grizzly bears, although plenty have used it for large game regardless.

The 7mm bullet generally has a solid ballistic coefficient. A hollow point boat tail design, such as the Hornady A-MAX, will consistently outperform a soft point bullet design in terms of trajectory flatness.

You should also notice that lighter-grain bullets tend to have a flatter trajectory than heavier bullets. However, lighter bullets are also more affected by wind drift, so sometimes you have to pick your poison or split the difference.

Below, you’ll find sample 7mm-08 bullet drop charts that givesyou a general idea of what the 7mm-08 trajectory looks like.

7mm-08 Trajectory Chart

Note: The chart above is an example of one 7mm-08 Rem load, and actual ballistic performance may vary depending on bullet weight, lot, barrel length, and environmental conditions while shooting.

7mm-08 Velocity (fps)

Muzzle velocity is the speed at which the bullet travels as it exits the rifle barrel. Muzzle velocity is measured in feet per second (fps). Generally, a longer barrel produces a higher muzzle velocity, as it gives propellant gas more time to exert its energy against the bullet.

Bullet design and weight also play a role in velocity, especially downrange. Many shooters love higher velocity rifle cartridges because they tend to have flatter trajectories and are less affected by wind drift than projectiles of similar design and weight at lower velocities.

You can tinker with the muzzle velocity when reloading ammo. With factory ammo, you are stuck with whichever performance the manufacturer intended. I fire factory loads all the time, so I’m not dogging it; it’s just a drawback of factory loads vs. handloads.

The Barnes VOR-TX 120 grain TTSX BT has a high muzzle velocity of 3,035 fps, whereas the Choice Ammunition 150 grain Partition has a lower muzzle velocity of 2,705 fps due to its heavier projectile’s greater inertia.

The 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip claims to reach 3,050 fps out of the barrel, while the Swift 160 grain A-Frame tops out at 2,564 fps.

Overall, the 7mm-08 has solid muzzle velocities, which propel its bullets to flat trajectories.

7mm-08 Muzzle Energy

Muzzle energy is how much force a bullet exits the rifle barrel with. Muzzle energy in measured in foot-pounds (ft lbs) of energy.

Scroll through the gun forums, and you’ll inevitably see someone saying terminal ballistics don’t matter much when target shooting. Sure, a bullet will punch a hole through paper, but what about when you’re attempting to knock over metal silhouettes at long range?

I’d say knockdown power matters to those shooters!

And it all starts at the muzzle. A higher muzzle energy typically means more recoil. For example, the HSM Low Recoil 140 grain OPT has a muzzle energy of 1,589 ft lbs, while the Hornady Superformance 139 grain SST punches with 2,686 ft lbs.

Heavier bullets tend to have more muzzle energy and carry that energy further downrange, whereas lighter projectiles tend to have less muzzle energy; therefore, they don’t have as much energy to carry to the target. While that’s not always the case, it’s a good rule of thumb.

7mm-08 Effective Range

The 7mm-08 is a short-action rifle cartridge capable of taking antelope out to 600 yards. It owes that feat to its projectiles’ solid sectional density and terminal ballistics.

Whether taking your Ruger rifle to the shooting range or Weatherby hunting rifle to the plains, you can get plenty of range from the 7mm-08 cartridge.

How Do 7mm-08 Ballistics Compare to Other Rifles?

The 7mm-08 holds its weight against most short-action rifle cartridges. Obviously, it doesn’t stack up well against rounds like the 300 Winchester Magnum or 7mm Remington Magnum, but it also doesn’t thump your shoulder like those rounds.

Several comparable rifle cartridges are the 6.5 Creedmoor, 243 Win, 270 Win, 308 Win, 30-06 and 7x57 Mauser.

We will compare the ballistics of a few below to give you an idea of which is best for your situation.

I like the idea of the 7-08, but if I wanted to shoot medium-sized game at 600+ yards and use a 308 I wouldn’t use a 150gr partion.

I’d use a 175gr 308 Bulldozer ll at 2900fps and still have over 1500fpe at 800 yards, good enough for a bull Elk.

The 308 Win is more versatile.

Its surely less confusing :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Ammo nomenclature is the redneck equivalent of ebonics, I’m not sure if an MA/BA is required or lgbt interpreter, there sure seems to be both, scientific data and gender bending, huh, maybe thats it, perversion for brainiacs :man_shrugging:

The 140 grain bullets seem to have a sweet spot, great round for whitetails and such. I know people who have used it for years with no issues on deer, If you want to shoot over 400 yards there is probably 50 or more rounds that are better, it all depends like any round on what it will be used for. I have never owned one due to I have been shooting 308 for so long, but I don’t use the 308 past the range I would use the 7-08 for anyway.

I agree. 140s work on deer. Hell if we want to pick a 308 spawn and do the lite bullet thing the 243 has been a heck of a slayer and shoots even flater at most deer hunting ranges.

With modern bullets and powders the 308 Win can do it at 1000 yards. Admittedly not my first choice.

There is something about the 7s and 130-140gr that just work. The 6.5s too, but to really get out there, all of 'em need to go Magnum.

I still think that the 308 is the most versatile, accurate and efficient cartridge. I have a thing for it I’ll admit, but I don’t think I’m alone.

Truly. I wish to God Sig had chosen a different name for the 357 Sig, and you wouldn’t believe how many people order buy 300 BLK thinking it’s a cheaper alternative to 300 Win Mag.

I call that one the sexy round, its both slender and filled out, nicely proportioned for a pistol round :yep:

And if that don’t remind you of a woman they are pretty damn loud as well
