Heavyweight .357 Loads?

I know Buffalo Bore, Underwood, and CorBon have some heavier weight offerings in 180 gr./ 200 gr., but I was wondering if any other manufacturer is currently offering anything similar.

Thanks.

When I shoot my 357 Revolver* I like both extremes.

  1. I like plinking with cheep 38 Special cowboy loads (about 700 or 800 feet / sec)
  2. I also like powerful, jacketed 357 Magnum loads.

I don’t shoot much in between.

It sounds like you are talking about factory ammo but I like to handload.

I’m having trouble finding a handload recipe for 357 over 1200 feet/sec. I’ve been trying Win 296, TrueBlue, Enforcer and 2400 and I get the cases stuck in the cylinder at about 1200 feet / Sec.

*I have 4 revolvers that shoot 38 Special but only one of them also shoots 357.

@WV460Hunter “the Resident Safety Consultant”, Do you handload or just print handload manuals online? I’m interested in real world experience, what you’ve actually tried.

I’m shooting standard 158 grain jacketed 357 bullets. The heaviest bullet you mentioned is 105 grains. I’m sure I can propel a 105 grain bullet well over 1200 feet / sec.

We can disregard the faster burning powders such as TiteGroup. Even with the 90 grain bullet you mentioned has a max velocity of 1,107. That doesn’t address my question.

Trail Boss with a 90 grain bullet - same story there except max velocity of 1221.

Here’s what I get. These are only the handloads that I have chronographed.

357 handloads

Some of these were hard to eject due to the pressure. When I handload 44 Mag I can get much higher speeds with heavier bullets (240 grain).

I shoot my 357 out of a Ruger Blackhawk. The odd thing is that gun shoots slower than similar guns. For example shooting the same 38 Special handloads (handloaded the same day with the same recipe) will get me 647 feet / second out of the Ruger with a 4 5/8" barrel. The same cartridges out of a Ruger Service Six with a 4 inch barrel goes 743 feet / sec.

It seems like I need higher pressures in my Blackhawk to propel the bullets at the same speeds I can shoot with the Service Six.

@DurangoDave I dont buy any ammo I reload all my own stuff . I used to load for .357 but havent for several years. I used to shoot 125gr. And under 158 only used for self defense.
I always used Hodgon and speer for load data and Lyman .
If I am posting it I used it before but not this one. I used a Ruger GP100 with 4"barrel
This is straight from Hodgdon.
Of course I always start att minimum even in my .460 and work up.
158gr.hornady xtp
Minimum 15.0gr. Of H110 @1418fps
28,600 cup

Maximum 16.7 of H110 @ 1571fps @40700 cup

I havent loaded for it for years.
And I dont recall what weapon you loading it in. My Ruger was strong.
I dont vouch for it havent shot it in years.
No I have not tried this particular load .

I use a FBI Elmer mold. It puts out 170gr hollow points.
The law used these for 30 years. Good enough for me.

Now loads. The woman’s Security Six can not handle the loads I made for my Blackhawk. Those rounds would removed the forcing cone.
Dont shoot good without it.
I limit her’s to 1100fps. Where 1500fps was the norm for the Blackhawk.

Wow oh wow @Quick_Draw_Mcgraw thatvis a very nice older mold reminds me of an M&P molde

If cost is no problem you can still find the mold. I paid $140 for the mold and it did not have the hollow point punch. To get that I had ot send the mold to Canada and have a custom punch made. This one is his later design, Elmer made two punches. One for the cops, and one for him.

Ideal I believe was bought out by Lyman when they was going belly up…I have read after alot of loaders that swear some of the old ideal moldes are some of the best.
