Wife wanted a fireplace mantel. Specifically a shaker.
Here is what I built today.
Very simple to make and only about $70 in material.
Turned out beautiful!, Great job!

I’d figure given the quakes you guys get that would be undesirable

Post your home improvement projects here at will.
I will be improving my attic hatch/door/panel today. Right now it is just a piece of drywall sitting on top of drywall overhang.
Wife doesn’t want it to be highlighted by moldings, hinges, or handles so I will not be going a swing-out door type. She wants it to be less visible, so I figured I will make a better lift up and out panel.

So the attic hatch/door/panel…
Supporting a piece of drywall were 4 metal corner bead strips. They were attached to ceiling side and not attached to the frame of the opening so they could protrude.
I took them out.
And decided to go with a frame that will support a box hatch.
Put drywall mud into cracks and damaged areas
Built a box like a drawer and attached “bumpers” that would sit on my frame to bring the bottom of the box flush with ceiling (still needs adjustment)
Remember how I said my wife didn’t want any moldings or anything protruding down from the ceiling? Now she wants moldings. I agree. There is no way to make it tight enough and still be removable, so there are seams. If I make a picture frame from molding and have it cover the seams it would look better.
Oh, and the reason I wanted it to be a box is so that I can put insulation into it.
P.S. the opening was a parallelogram. I used my frame to make it a rectangle.

Also second sanding and light primer on the fireplace mantel and it is good to wait for tile surround.

I hope you did your environmental survey. You could have some endangered single cell organism living their and you destroyed their habitat. 
Also did you submit you plans 6 months prior so they could be reviewed and have time for a public hearing about the social cost of your home improvements. After all your neighbors property value may increase because you have the nerve to make your neighborhood nicer. Ergo property taxes in your area are going to increase so your neighbors really should have a say in what you do on your property. Come to think of it have you supplied them with an MSDS for all the materials you are using. I think they have the right to know what kind of dangerous products you are using and transporting through the neighborhood. Wow, i could go on but you live in California and although it’s funny to me, something tells me this little tangent about California’s draconian rules hit a little too close to home to be as funny to you as it is to. me Seriously though nice job on it all.

Yeah, CA is awesome.
We are planning on making some major changes to the backyard, front yard, etc. Cannot wait to see how that all goes.

The time has come to replace the rest of the power outlets and light switches in the house.
Pull this outlet out and not being an electrician I am a bit surprised. I took the picture after I pulled the hot line out, so imagine it is still connected. Who can spot why I was surprised before I go over what I was looking at?
