I walked from Mexico to Canada twice and from Georgia to Maine
I didnāt know anyone did that, you did, twice?
I live in a shipping container on top of a mountain.

I walked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, 2654 miles, in 2009.
Turned 40 years old the day i headed north from the southern terminus.
Walked the Continental Divide trail from Mexico to Canada, 3,100 miles, in 2010.
Walked the Appalachian trail, from Amicalola Falls Georgia to Mt Katahdin Maine, 2,180 miles, in 2011.
It was my mid-life crisis gift to myself.
Everything I had done in my life up to that point was to earn money.
Walking the Triple Crown was entirely for the sake of the journey.
It cost me $5,000 to hike the PCT.
$4,500 for the CDT.
And $3,500 for the AT.
I exhausted my savings hiking those trails.
There is no monetary or paper reward for doing so.
Living under the sun, in the rain, snow, through the fog.
Sleeping like a deer each night far from the habitations of man.
Seeing mountains rise in the distance, reaching them in a day, climbing their slopes, and them dissappearing in the blue haze of miles behind was very powerful.
It broke me.
I cried.
I bled.
I loved every mile.
Would hike every step again in a heartbeat.
But I have to secure my retirement plan first.
As for the shipping container.
It is actually 2 40 ft connex boxes side by side with a 10 foot gap between.
A 10:12 pitch snow roof over the top with sliding barn doors at each end.
The container building is technically a temporary structure.
Sits on railroad ties.
I have direct vent propane wall heaters.
One container is insulated.
The other is just storage.
The central space is a sort of garage for a skid steer and snowmobile.

You passed through my favorite Jeeping area of all timeā¦Naches Pass in Washington. The hiking trail crosses our Jeep trail at the Naches Pass summit. You probably stopped at the hikers cabin there.

The Strato-Volcanos beginning with Shasta and continuing North were what defines the Pacific Northwest in my mind.
Really, Lassen is where a lot of PCT hikers believe the Sierra ends and Cascades begin.
It seems that way hiking the trail.
And the rain forestsā¦
I set my green Victorinox classic down on the moss in Glacier Peak wilderness andā¦ it is still there.
I carried a banana yellow knife from then on.

The downturn in the economy in 2008 helped.
Boss said, how about a leave of absence this summer because plumbing work fell off a cliff.
I said, how about 6 months.
Why?
I am going to hike from Mexico to Canada.
Ohā¦ uh okay.
In fact, 18 years prior, at 22 years of age, i attempted to hike the PCT.
Quit at mile 42.
That failure sat in my subconscious for nearly 2 decades.
So when he asked meā¦
It just popped out.
I decided to hike the PCT at 40 and nothing was going to stop me.
Nothing could.
Not giardia, losing 40 lbs in 2 weeks.

There is a movie of a group of kids that rode mustangs from the Mexican boarder to the Canadian boarder. Itās called unbranded
I suggest you all watch it. Good movie. Bet that walk would be interesting too. You should have recorded it

On a gun related note; I sold a Ruger mini 30 before the PCT.
Partly because it wouldnāt reliably fire Bear ammo.
Also did not want it laying around, even in a locked metal box in storage, for 6 months.
And I used the money to buy hiking gear.
I kept my Stainless Marlin Papoose and I think I had my Henry Lever action .22 as well.
I know there was one other gunā¦ canāt recallā¦ oh yeah, they got lost in a boating accident.
Thatās right.

Yep, thatās me.
A lot of woo woo stuff in that journal.
It comes with selling almost everything you own, abandoning your rental home, and living out of a backpack on the ground while walking 14 hours a day.
I am actually a big tough plumberā¦ okay a medium tuff plumberā¦ okay 5ā 7 and 3/16" plumber.
