I'm Sharon

They have the test online once a year. I have taken it a couple of times without success. My brother was on there about 15 years ago.

Welcome to Full 30 @TheSilverFox, good to see another female here. It’s always good to have another female perspective and member. We need more women here and in this firearms community.

Good thing I was done swallowing my tea when I read that Sharon! I think the mindset that most of us have makes us like cats (tending toward individualism). Just as easy as cats to herd too.

Welcome to Full30 from central Maine! I’m continually curious and hungry for knowledge too, even at my advanced years.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Detonics! I don’t know much but trying to learn and add to my limited firearms skill set. Glad to be here :grinning:

I think you’re never too old to learn unless you think you are

Maine is beautiful-looked into moving there. Worked in Bangor in the dead of winter for a couple of weeks in the late 80’s. (I was a traveling temp)

Then you saw Maine at it’s worst. Our winters can be brutal.

Have you considered shooting competition? We don’t do it because we are GODs gift to shooting but to get better. I’ve seen noobs at a match and there are lots of us old duffers, yeah, some really good shooters too, but they aren’t the average by any means.

Thanks Dan! I’ll be checking you guys out at your blog

I hadn’t before, but the gun range I’m thinking of joining has competitions and great training. I think once I get my feet wet I will enter some competitions.
Thanks for the encouragement!

It’s a great way to spend a day and the folks you meet at a match are the best people. You might want to go to spectate at first, ask questions, and let them know your lack of experience. Trust me on this, it won’t be held against you, just the opposite.

Here’s a good intro video to USPSA (below), there are other disciplines, like IDPA. Today USPSA has a pistol caliber carbine division so rifles can be used rather than handguns if that interests you more. Or you can shoot both at the same match by paying 2 entry fees. I’m not saying you should, only that it’s possible. When I got started I shot handgun, now I shoot PCC. If I (or anyone else) want to shoot handgun I just show up with the gear and tell them what I’m shooting. My point is that one isn’t locked into anything. It’s something to consider and will be there when/if you want it. You don’t even need to be a USPSA member to shoot.

There is Steel Challenge also. In that discipline so many guns can be used that it’s easier to state what can’t be used rather than what can. It even allows .22s which is what I shoot. It’s a really easy and inexpensive way to get into shooting. For that just show up and make it known that you want to shoot and I have no doubt that someone with a .22 will step forward to let you use their gun. Make it known during the safety briefing. They will ask if there are any new shooters, that’s the time to make it known. Trust me, they will be delighted to have a new shooter show up. Steel Challenge is HUGE fun! Who doesn’t like shooting steel and getting the immediate gratification of the “ping”?

Great video-thank you for the encouragement and information-I think I’ll spectate first to see how things work and get the lay of the land.
Steel shooting sounds fun and satisfying!
