I love my 40, it’s a Springfield XD. The barrel and slide are ported, and with my TLR-2 underneath it adding weight to the nose, I can double tap it much better than I can with any other pistol.
Whether or not it’s dying off, I haven’t noticed. I figure guys shoot the 9 more because it’s softer and cheaper, not because 40 sucks. And back to the weight issue, in my experience as an instructor, my shooters are typically more accurate with a steel frame 1911 45 than they are with a polymer Glock 9, for what it’s worth. You just need to shoot what you’re good with really.
