Knife project #1 - making it more difficult than it needs to be.

Not sure how long it will be so I am probably going to break it up…

Also, didnt have a whole lot of time tonight, but decided to try to etch the edge away. Gave it 10 minutes.

Here is a result. Should work to remove the edge.

That whole idea to Etch the edge away kind of failed.
The second half I simply sanded the edges down on.

Shape I am going with

Could have heated that spot past blue and used the hacksaw.

If you need the whole edge softened just put it in the oven at 500 for an hour. As long as it gets to light blue it should be soft enough to work with hand tools.

Could have and should have done that.

A little update.

The bevels were filed flat following the contour of the edge, then I tapered the sides which changed the bevels width/height.

Top of the blade was rounded.

Sanding under way. This was used 220 grit sandpaper.

Thank you all.

I am thinking I will leave bolster and handle work to after it comes back from heat treat.

I think I am ready to send it out.

Will be polishing it properly after it comes back.

The shape looks weird in those pics. Here are better ones.

What are you planning for a handle?

Was thinking brass bolster and wood handle. Open to suggestions as to wood species but since this is not a fabulous blade I don’t want to go exotic. On the second one, I may go wrapped jute micarta also with brass bolster.

I can’t wait to see the finished product!

Will be dropping it off to go to Peters’ Heat Treating today. The edge is a bit thinner than they recommend, so fingers crossed.

Meanwhile I will be buying brass, wood, and working on the second one.

Did you only do this one or is there more ?

I only had time for one. Will be working on the other half of that blank while this one is heat treated.
