Long Range Sixgunning

Maybe not what’s considered long range, but 50+ years ago when I could use iron sights I would shoot tennis balls at 75 yards from the rollover prone position with a Ruger Sec’ Six. I remember holding the front sight on the target and dropping the rear sight to a line on the front sight. Can’t do that anymore; now I need optics.

Years later with a scope and a single shot .308Win handgun from the Creedmore position tight groups weren’t difficult at 200 yards.

Could it be done with a .45 Colt? Sure, using the same way I did with the Security Six. Just hold over enough and lob the bullets in. A really fine handgun would be on my wishlist to get it done. I remember using a .45 ACP 1911 to scare the crap out of a cardboard target at distance years ago. I think it was 200 yards and it wasn’t particularly difficult but I wasn’t shooting one handed or even two handed but from a better support. Cooper could scare the target at 600 yards from what I remember reading. Did he bag a jackrabbit with a .45 ACP at 600 yards? I seem to remember that but maybe it wasn’t him.

We do it, not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard…to paraphrase a late president.

MY buddies 44 mag hit the 200 yard 6 out of six times.
He removed the scope that came on it. Said it was not needed.

Being that the civil war six guns were sighted at 70 yards.
Looks like they been going down hill since then.

Couple old boys a few years back hit the 600 + yard steel repeatedly with hand cast handloads out of SSA Colts. Don’t remember the caliber. It’s in the photo above, can’t see it, up by the grade by the power lines, can’t see them either. Left of the bushes middle top above the last white dot you can see. I’ve hit it a couple times but not what you would call repeatedly.

I hope the dog moves…lol
Okay on a more serious note.
I am proficient with mine at 100, and can do okay at 200 but my deadly zone is 50-75yrds. With that being said I been hunting with big bore revolvers for 20 yrs. And in that time 99.9% of kill shots have bee 50-60 yards. Thats the zone I know I got this. Its the distance I try to close to in order to make that shot that will produce the result without maimeing the animal. I see long distance as doing one thing the best. Making your shooting at shorter yardage better. The grips the rest positions hold , breathing etc that you glean at long range shooting will translate to the shorter distance making you a better shooter. P.S @albroswift-600 yards thats insane :flushed: …:joy: but I want to try it. My range only goes to 300yards…sadness…

That’s a steel wolf target, but the farmer on the JD should be avoided.

You can’t believe how tiny that little white square is compared to the width of your front blade. If the front of your hood was the front sight the hood ornament would be the target.

Bwahahaha , :joy: :joy: :joy: well I was close . Does that count ?? or is that just in horseshoes ? I don’t mind an ol’ grumpy guss I just kill em with kindness. Yeah, I figure it is pretty much covering the target…
If ya dont mind my asking where in tbe heck are ya’ll getting that much room to shoot ??

My dog barks at the wolf silhouette every year, don’t feel bad.
Where those photos were taken is Valleyford, WA. A little south of Spokane. Farmer let’s us shoot there. This year we shot at the Red Moon Ranch, 50 miles north of Spokane.
Here is a shot from Red Moon.

If I was able to make it . I promise I won’t bark at the wolf silhouette…
I take it it is a 100 yard or 200 yard target?

Wonder , what are the rules of transporting a firearm in a vehicle all the way across the country ? Anyone know? @Ridgewalker you tend to know this kinda stuffs

@WV460Hunter there is FOPA that guarantees that we have the right to transport an unloaded firearm interstate.

The rubs;

  1. It has to be between a location where we could legally carry it and to a destination where we could also legally carry it. This is irregardless of jurisdictional laws between start and finish locations.

  2. The gun must be unloaded, cased and or not readily accessible. I believe ammo needs to be stored separately as well.

We usually put the wolf out about 100 yards or less, most everyone can get good hits on it, really gives off a satisfying ring.
I would think WV would be a great place to start your own Elmer Keith Shoot. Why go anywhere? It’s a pretty easy formula.
