Here are a couple of things that I guarantee work, both from my own experience and that of others I have told:

  • Sneezing: If you feel a sneeze coming on, take the heel of your palm and place it on your forehead, just above the bridge of your nose, and rub upwards - you may need to repeat once or twice - and you will stifle the sneeze; but Wait! it gets better, once you know what this feels like, simply imagine yourself doing this and you will still stifle the sneeze!

  • Toothache (lower jaw): If you have toothache in the lower jaw, feel along the lower inside of your jawbone under your chin and, about a third to halfway from back to front you will feel a notch (either side of your jaw should work), press gently but firmly and repeatedly and you should achieve some relief from the toothache. [Yes, there are also pressure points for the upper jaw, but I have not used them in anger as, in my experience, toothache seems to be more of a lower jaw thing.]

I don’t know the mechanism for the sneezing thing, but the notch in the jaw allows you to manipulate a nerve (don’t ask me which, though).

actually a better way to prevent a sneeze as taught many years back in Recce Scout was just tickle the roof of your mouth with your tongue. No movement, and no sneezing.

sometimes the resulting tickle was/is more annoying than the sneeze.
But when you are laying chilly in a hide, sharing space with the creepy crawlers, “rubbing” your forehead is not something you want to be doing.
