This customer requested a .45 1911 in a classic look. My plan was to do traditional bluing. However, the slide is stainless, and stainless can’t be blued. So I went to plan B and used midnight blue Cerakote. Wow is all I can say. The classic checkered wooden grips really dress it up. All the external parts will be black with a little bit of bare stainless just to give it a little more pop. I can’t wait to finish this one. Who knew class and simple could look so drop-dead sexy?

Mn or Zn parking does not work on most stainless steels. There are stainless steels that can be blued. There are special hot blueing salts (Brownell’s and Du-Lite) for many other types of stainless steels. You can do salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing like Melonite, physical vapor deposition like IonBond or DLC, or chemical vapor deposition, plasma coating… and a bunch of other stuff. There are a ton of options out there that will produce a beautiful black finish.
