The Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II is the only factory $500~600 AR I recommend to people. Itās put together well and is a solid platform for beginners. I almost bought one but decided to build my first AR myself.

Huh, I never commented on this one. Well, time to rustle some jimmies.
- AR15/variants (AR10/AR300BO/AR7.62) Because of the simple design, lightweight, reliability, and modularity.
- AKm/variants (pick your caliber) End of the world reliabilty. Personally I prefer milled receivers, but I do acknowledge they are heavier.
- Piston Driven AR varients (PWS, LWRCI, POF, HK416/7) Concept is a balanced blend between #1 and #2.
- HK G3/variants. This one might be a shoe-in, but theyāre quality rifles on all fronts, and nothing beats the HK slap.
- The Garand. If you had nothing else, it could compete against 1-4. It may not win, but it could do it.
Iām not including calibers, because then the argument turns into which caliber is better. Iām focusing on design concepts of the rifles only, and I think these are all quality designs in their respective areas.

Why would you want more than one if itās expected to be used in an actual battle situation.
It wouldnāt be as if you would carry more than one to the field of battle, is there?
Iād choose the most versatile one that would be expected to do all that was needed.
If truth be known, what Iād really want is a very fast vehicle.

5.56 is not a battle rifle cartridge. I think one might want to check the DODās definition of a battle rifle. 30 caliber or bigger, which means the M14 was the last US battle rifle. The 7.62x39 is the first and ONLY assault rifle cartridge. Being that it WAS the only combat rifle made with the sector witch that goes AUTO-SEMI-SAFE, backwards from everyone else.

If you are referencing the selector setting on a AK, the order of operation is actually safe/auto/semi.
Back to the definition of ābattleā rifle versus āassaultā rifle. Those are actually artificial constructs not used by the DoD but rather within the civilian terminology. Examples of this are obvious. The original DoD description of the M16 is rifle, not battle or assault rifle. The M4 series is officially described as a carbine. The MK12 series is known as a SPR being special purpose receiver and later known as a special purpose rifle. Yes, it is true that the term battle rifle came into vogue after WWII to distinguish the older full power cartridge semi-autoās (M1,G/K43,SVT38/40,FN49,etcā¦) from the new on the scene SKS and AK47 but it really is more of a artificial term that today has no true or applicable relevance
If I ever have to use my MK12 build, M4 clone or new AR āpistolā build into a combat situation you can bet they are now āspecial purpose/battle/assaultā rifles/carbines, LOL. Getting wrapped around the pole over the caliber today is pretty meaningless IMO.

( 5.56 is not a battle rifle cartridge ) I guess all the people killed with them in Battles did not know betterā¦any caliber is a battle cartridgeā¦when you are in a battle as long as you have something to shoot you will not care what cartridge it isā¦
