Fathers of Victims Want Award for Paper Exposing the Truth Behind Parkland Shooting

In the year since Nikolas Cruz shot dead 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, Fort Lauderdale’s Sun-Sentinel has pushed for answers. But the Broward County School District has stonewalled the newspaper’s public records requests, ridiculed one of its reporters as “smelly” and “skanky,” and tried to have two more of its journalists jailed.

At least so far, partially as a result of prodigious reporting and editorializing, all the top brass at the Sheriff’s Department has been removed and state gun laws have been changed — by formerly NRA-backed Republicans.

Now, parents of two children who were killed at the Parkland school are calling for the newspaper to be awarded journalism’s top honor, the Pulitzer Prize. In an open letter published Wednesday on the website Real Clear Education, Andrew Pollack and Ryan Petty wrote that the Sun-Sentinel’s work has revealed the full story behind the tragedy, uncovering how it was allowed to happen.

“This was the most avoidable mass murder in American history, enabled by a sheriff’s office and a school district characterized by administrative incompetence so staggering and moral corruption so deep that it took the Sun Sentinel the better part of the year the uncover it all,” the parents wrote to the leadership of the Pulitzer Prize committee. “But long after the national media moved on to the next controversy, local reporters here kept at it.”

Pollack’s 18-year-old daughter, Meadow, and Petty’s 14-year-old daughter, Alaina, were among the students and staff members killed during the February 14, 2018, massacre. In the months since, the fathers have become prominent school safety advocates. Pollack has emerged as the face of the conservative post-Parkland movement, while Petty ran for the school board, narrowly losing in the primary to incumbent Donna Korn.

In their letter, the two parents list a few examples of stories the Sun-Sentinel broke. There’s the paper’s exposé on the “culture of leniency” that allowed students such as Cruz to fall between the cracks. There was the investigation into schools’ failure to report on-campus crimes to the state. Then there was the story on the district’s efforts to mask the issues that led to the shooting.

“The work by the Sun-Sentinel’s reporters reminds us of what journalism can and should be, and also what is tragically being lost as local newspapers downsize and the news media is increasingly dominated by a clickbait competition tied to national flashpoint issues of the week,” wrote Pollack and Petty.

Text of second article:

On Valentine’s Day 2018, a teen gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at his former high school in Parkland, Florida. It was one of the deadliest shootings at a high school in the history of the United States. Seventeen people were killed including the children of two Florida parents Andrew Pollack and Ryan Petty.

Pollack and Petty were outraged by the way the national media handled the story. Rather than focusing on how the system failed to prevent the tragedy, the news stories focused on how the NRA and pro-gun activists were to blame for the shooting.

The media in large part focused on a group of survivors and students who formed a political action committee for gun control called “Never Again MSD.” The focus of the group was to demand legislative action to stop gun violence. As a result of the group’s efforts, Florida increased funding for school security and raised the required age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21.

Amidst the sea of media anti-gun hysteria, one publication focused on getting to the truth, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and now Pollack and Petty want the Sun-Sentinel to receive one of journalism’s most prestigious awards, the Pulitzer Prize.

“This was the most avoidable mass murder in American history,” wrote Pollack and Perry in a letter to the Pulitzer Committee, “enabled by a sheriff’s office and a school district characterized by administrative incompetence so staggering and moral corruption so deep that it took the Sun Sentinel the better part of the year [to] uncover it all”

The Sun-Sentinel ran a series of stories exposing how the Broward schools, in which the Parkland shooting occurred, failed to address problems that contributed to the attack.

In one article, the paper exposed how a culture of tolerance regarding student misbehavior allowed students like the Parkland shooter to have “an endless loop of violations and second chances.”

In another story, the publication exposed how the Broward school district failed to properly report crimes that occurred to the state. The failure prevented authorities from identifying “trouble spots” so that parents could be properly informed.

In the most powerful piece, the Sun-Sentinel exposed an active cover-up perpetrated by the school district to avoid legal liability for the shooting. The news story detailed how the Broward schools delayed or withheld records and intentionally spread misinformation.

“If Americans knew the full story behind the Parkland school shooting, our nation would have united in revulsion against the incompetent, self-aggrandizing leaders who allowed this to happen and tried to cover it up. And we could have united in purpose behind reforms intended to keep students safe, rather than simply move on, a little angrier at each other than before, and wait for the next one to happen,” Pollack and Petty said.

People need to wake up and actually see what is happening here.
Not be TOLD what to see as is so prevalent today.
Even though the failings of the Leftest Education system (OOOhhh they are just expressing their feelings BS) and the so called Law Enforcement failures we saw on tape, what has happened?
Florida passes confiscation Red Flag laws and ignores the facts of the case totally and fails to take action to fix the actual problem.
Other states also have passed some ludicrous laws using the Parkland shooting as their excuse.
And what have these laws accomplished?
THEY HOLD EVERYDAY LAW ABIDING GUN OWNERS RESPONSIBLE FOR MASS SHOOTINGS AND FAILURES OF LIBERAL LEFT WING POLICIES!

Now don’t you all feel like dirt and scum?
If you listen to the mainstream media and left wing politicians then YOU are responsible for every shooting in the country to include Gang Violence and Criminal Activities.
I should just go dig a whole and bury myself…

Stand Up and let the people you associate with what kind of wrongs are being perpetrated across the country by this type legislation and tell people the REAL STORY.
Unless we stand up for our rights and the truth then the wave will sweep the country one state at a time.
